The international prototype meter was a meter-long rod used to set the standard length of the metric system locked in a basement in Paris. As we have moved into the 21 century definitions for scales of measure have become less and less accessible with the current definition being the distance light travels in 1/299792458 of a second. A definition reserved for an elite few.
