This extension handles this for you automatically and you don't even need to do anything else but installing the extension.
If you want to control the behaviour of the extension, you can simple use the extension popup user interface;
* to change smart mute behaviour
* to mute / unmute other tabs
or you can use the predefined shortcuts for muting and unmuting.
Mute:
* CTRL + SHIFT + I
* COMMAND + SHIFT + I
Unmute:
* CTRL + SHIFT + U
